Common Electric Gate Problems (And How to Fix Them)

Electric driveway gates are a smart investment. They enhance your home’s security, improve kerb appeal, and make entering and exiting your property effortless. But like any mechanical or automated system, they need regular maintenance…and can occasionally go wrong.

At TWS Automation, we repair electric gates across County Durham and the North East. Whether you have automated swing gates, sliding gates, or a full entry system with intercom and access control, we’ve seen every issue you can imagine.

Below, we’ve listed the most common electric gate problems and how you can deal with them, plus when it’s best to call in the professionals, like us.

1. Electric Gate Won’t Open or Close

Below, we’ve listed the most common electric gate problems and how you can deal with them, plus when it’s best to call in the professionals, like us.

One of the most common. If your electric gate won’t move at all, or stops halfway, it could be caused by:

✔️ Disrupted or unstable power supply
✔️ Faulty gate motor or burnt-out components
✔️ A damaged or unresponsive control board
✔️ Remote not sending a signal (or receiver not detecting it)
✔️ Blocked or misaligned track (especially for sliding gates)
✔️ Worn or broken limit switches and safety sensors

✅ Solution
First, check for any blockages or obvious issues with power. Try using the manual override (usually found on the motor). If that works, it’s likely an automation fault, such as a faulty receiver, wiring issue or a blown fuse. Avoid DIY electrical work; instead, call a qualified gate engineer to inspect and repair safely.

2. Remote Control or Keypad Not Working

Can’t open your gates via fob or keypad? It could be as simple as:

✔️ Dead remote battery

✔️ Faulty keypad

✔️ Signal interference

✔️ Damaged receiver board

✅ Solution
Try using a spare remote fob. If nothing works, your system might not be receiving a signal. A gate technician can reprogram or replace the faulty component.

3. Electric Gates Opening or Closing on Their Own

This is rare, but serious. Gates operating independently can pose a security and safety risk.

Common causes:

✔️ Water ingress in control panels

✔️ Interference from nearby electronics

✔️ Faulty sensors

✔️ Power surges

✅ Solution
Turn off the power supply and switch to manual mode immediately. This issue requires urgent attention from a qualified electric gate technician to prevent further malfunction or property damage.

4. Problems in Bad Weather

Sliding gates can freeze to the ground, and swing gate motors can struggle in heavy rain or snow. Cheaper systems may not be adequately protected from the elements.

Typical issues:

✔️ Gates moving slowly or not at all in cold conditions

✔️ Electrical errors during or after storms

✔️ Water ingress in junction boxes

✅ Solution

Keep the gate tracks clear, especially in winter, and schedule regular maintenance to ensure all seals and covers are intact. Modern electric gates are much better sealed against the elements.

5. Worn or Noisy Mechanisms

If your gates are making grinding noises or feel jerky when moving, the hinges, arms or rollers may be worn or unlubricated.

✅ Solution

Don’t ignore unusual noises — it’s usually a sign that something needs adjusting or lubricating. If left unchecked, it could lead to costly repairs or part replacements.

Regular Maintenance = Fewer Problems

Most of the issues above can be avoided with regular servicing. Our maintenance plans cover:

✔️ Motor checks

✔️ Control box diagnostics

✔️ Sensor calibration

✔️ Greasing and alignment

✔️ Emergency override tests
